Talking TV With Ryan and Ryan (podcast)

It's Mo here with a podcast with Mike Royce and Kevin Biegel, the executive producers of the Fox comedy 'Enlisted.' In this podcast, we talk about the state of comedy on the broadcast networks, we talk about 'Enlisted' and its possible future beyond Fox (fingers crossed!), and the guys also take questions from 'Enlisted' fans. We talk a bit about the final three episodes of the season as well -- those outings are quite entertaining, and they will air 7 p.m. ET Sundays on Fox in June.

Be sure to subscribe to the new feed for the podcast here if you like to listen on iTunes. You'll see plenty of ways in each post to stream or download MP3s if you hate iTunes with the same passion that Sgt. Major Cody hates Lt. Schneeberger.

It's Mo here with a 30-minute chat with 'Scandal' actor Jeff Perry, who plays Chief of Staff Cyrus Beene on the ABC drama.

If you'd like to hear more from Perry on what makes Cyrus tick and how "Scandal" operates, check out the separate panel discussion on the show that was recently held at the University of Chicago's Institute of Poliitcs. The IOP's TV Festival was held April 13, and other panel discussions included creators and actors from "Veep," "Alphas," "House of Cards" and "The West Wing"; check out videos of those discussions here

It's Mo here, and in this podcast, I spend just under an hour talking to Jill Soloway, who created the "dark comedy" "Transparent." The half-hour pilot premiered on Amazon recently and it stars Jeffrey Tambor, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker and Gaby Hoffmann.

Soloway, who previously worked on shows like "Six Feet Under" and "United States of Tara," talked about what it was like making a TV show with the online company and how it was different and similar from making a pilot with a broadcast or cable network. We also talked about the inspiration for the project and the research she did on the characters, and of course there was a digression about "Girls."

Mo spoke with Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of Syfy's "Battlestar Galactica," on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the show's debut. We talked about the legacy of the show, the reaction to its finale, the difficulty of finales in general (he had some advice for Damon Lindelof of "Lost"), how the TV landscape is changing, what TV networks are still afraid of and what kinds of fare they're looking for, and the difficulty of telling TV stories with religious and political themes. We also discussed "Helix," a new Syfy thriller he's involved in, and his other new project, an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" for Starz.

Hope you enjoy this far-ranging discussion of the current state of TV and the impact "Battlestar Galactica" had on this galaxy (among others). By the way, if you're feeling nostalgic for all things Adama and Roslin, Mo covered "BSG" in depth while it was on the air. Hi, it's Mo here with a Thangsgiving special for you. Almost exactly 20 years ago, Nickelodeon debuted a show that has gone on to lodge itself deeply in the hearts and minds of its fans. "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" was the story of two brothers -- both sporting red hair, both named Pete Wrigley -- and their slightly odd but lovable collection of friends, enemies, parents, teachers and neighbors. Rounding out the cast was, of course, Artie, the Strongest Man in the World.

In this half-hour chat, creators Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi discuss the ideas behind the show, the reasons for the fervor of the fanbase and the reasons they've returned to Nickelodeon with a new(ish) project, "Sanjay and Craig." Enjoy, my little Vikings: I certainly had a wonderful time talking to these guys, and not just because they said I could play Female Older Pete if a movie spinoff ever got off the ground.

By the way, for proof that my love of "Pete & Pete" runs deep, check this out. It's a "Pete & Pete" interview I did with McRobb and Viscardi in the mid-'90s.

Shows mentioned in the wide-ranging discussion include "Louie," "Babylon 5," "The X-Files," "The Twilight Zone," "Game of Thrones," "The Middleman," "The Shield," "Friday Night Lights," "Battlestar Galactica," "The Guild," "Rectify," "Banshee," "The Walking Dead," "Roots," "Star Trek," "Spartacus" (of course) and "Law and Order." No spoilers. A few time codes/guideposts (all times are approximate):

00 - 43: The various contributions that writers, showrunners and directors make. Post-production and digital innovation and their effect on storytelling.

44 - 48: An upcoming "Middleman" crowdfunding initiative (fans of comic books, the TV show and Amber Benson, don't miss this part).

49 - 67: Serialization, mythology, tone, viewpoint and theme and how they can unify a show.

68 - 83: Blockbuster television, the rise of genre television and television's return to event-based programming.

83 - end: The very early days of "Lost" and what it was like to be in on that creative process.

Give attention, "Spartacus" fans. We would break words with you. Find hand in possession of beverage, set mind to purpose and turn ears to epic finale podcast. Words will be spoken, hearts will be lifted, memories will be shared and such tributes will ensure that the Bringer of Rain, the Undefeated Gaul and all the gods of the arena shall not pass from memory.

All right, that's about as much "Spartacus"-speak as I can manage right now. But Ryan McGee and I are very excited to mark the series finale of Starz's "Spartacus" with an extensive interview with the show's creator. For more than an hour, executive producer Steven DeKnight talks about how he and the show's creative team approached the final installment of the epic drama, the challenges of wrapping up various' characters arcs, the underlying themes of the drama and many other details about what you saw in "Victory." We also review many high points and memorable moments from the show's history, and we discuss various elements of the fans response the show elicited over the past three years. If you've got questions about the last season or the finale, they're probably answered here, or in Ryan's interview with DeKnight over at the AV Club. [By the way, earlier in the season, I spoke to DeKnight, as well as cast members Todd Lasance (Caesar) and Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), and those interviews is here].

At the tail end of the DeKnight interview, he also discussed a show he is developing for Starz, the military sci-fi drama "Incursion." I am very excited about that project and DeKnight revealed some key information about it in that part of the interview.

For the final 20 minutes or so of the podcast, Ryan and I discussed our own reactions to the "Spartacus" finale, which I also wrote about at Huffington Post (that post also contains highlights of the DeKnight interview). Ryan's write up of "Victory" can be found here as well, and with that, we bid a fond farewell to "Spartacus," a badass, bloody, emotionally resonant show that accomplished a great deal in its short but eventful life. Gratitude!

Hello, it's  Mo here again, with a podcast featuring the men of Spartacus.

These interviews were recorded in late January, just before a Spartacus retrospective panel at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For the first half of the podcast, I spoke to Liam McIntyre and Todd Lasance, who play Spartacus and Julius Caesar in the new season. They discussed the men's motivations, their methods and why, for both characters, the battle between the slaves and the Romans is a fight to the death. We also discuss the fact that history is something of a spoiler in this regard, in that it's pretty clear that Caesar lived past this era in his life. But Lasance assures fans that Caesar will go through many "epic" and insane moments before the series comes to a close.

McIntyre also talks about Spartacus' mindset and priorities this season, and about the dark tone of the early episodes. There's also a brief discussion of the training regimes both men had to keep up in order to keep up the show's buff 'n' brawny image.

In the second half of the podcast, creator and executive producer Steven DeKnight talked about the things he tried to achieve with the Starz drama's final go-round. We didn't discuss upcoming plot points in detail, but we did talk things that have transpired in the first three episodes of "War of the Damned," including Naevia's shift in attitude, the arrival of the pirates, the difficult leadership challenges faced by Crassus, Caesar and Spartacus and other events that took place episodes that have already aired. We also discussed the issue of violence in popular culture and why some people find it difficult to see past the show's reputation for blood and breasts and to appreciate the challenging, subversive critique of power that lies at the heart of the drama.

Put ears to purpose and attend the words of these warriors! Be sure to subscribe to the new feed for the podcast here if you like to listen on iTunes. You'll see plenty of ways in each post to stream or download MP3s if you hate iTunes as much as Naevia hates showing mercy to Romans.

Hi all, this is Mo with an installment of the podcast that is somewhat unusual, but I'm very excited about it.

A week or two ago, I headed to Evanston hang out in the classroom of Max Dawson, a professor of Radio, Television and Film at Northwestern University. Max also invited critic/academic Myles McNutt, a previous Talking TV podcast guest, as well as Erik M. Adams, assistant TV editor of the AV Club

Max moderated a 90-minute discussion among the four of us, which took place in front of his class and which touched on the state of reality TV, trends in scripted TV, what defines a TV hit, how the financial models of the media industry are changing and what TV even is these days.

I enjoyed this discussion enormously; Myles, Erik and Max are very smart, funny and perceptive and I did my best to keep up with them. I am very grateful to Max for recording the discussion and allowing us to post it here for you (he also posted it on Soundcloud if you prefer that audio experience).

We didn't talk in depth about specific programs all that often in this chat, but if you enjoy chats about where TV creators and viewers have been and where they're going and why, I hope you find it interesting. Please forgive any quirks in the recording: Max's students were a very quiet, respectful (and smart) audience, but the audio quality reflects the fact that we were in a somewhat spacious classroom and there is going to be a bit of variability in volume and so forth. I think it sounds good, but it's not going to sound the same as a podcast recorded by two people speaking into microphones.

It's Mo here, with a chat with two members of the "Arrow" brain trust.

Fans of the CW show will want to check out this chat, which features "Arrow" executive producers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim talking about where Oliver Queen has been, where he's going and what friends and nemeses he'll encounter next.

Though there is a feature on the show on my Huffington Post page (and much of that feature is drawn from my chat with the show's producers), there are a lot of topics that didn't make it into the article. Is Oliver Queen a liberal superhero? Is he a Jack Bauer for the left? Is he a force for good in Starling City or a vigilante who's making up his morality as he's going along? What kind of relationship will he have with Laurel Lance going forward? What's next for his family and for his friend, Tommy Merlin? How does the show differ from the comic books and why?

All those questions are discussed, and we also chatted about upcoming guest stars James Callis, David Anders, Manu Bennett, the arrival of Roy Harper and the return of some key characters we met last fall.

Mo Ryan is here with an hour-plus discussion with TV and media critic Eric Deggans, who wrote the fascinating new book "Race Baiter."

Eric is the television and media critic for the Tampa Bay Times and also a contributor to NPR, and he's one of the most intelligent and most cogent critics I know. In his book, which I highly recommend, he has used his clear-sighted intelligence and his compassionate persistence to examine the way television does -- and does not -- deal with matters of race.

Why are there so few characters of color -- still -- on television? Why are leading characters so often white? Why do reality-show contestants so often conform to stereotypes about race, gender and class? Why does the news media persist in fanning the flames of conflict and discord rather than present opportunities for real discussions about important matters in this arena?

With solid reporting and clear-eyed analysis, Eric examines all these things and more in his book, and we discuss many of those topics in the podcast. We discuss how the book got that name, why the television industry is resistant real evolution in this area and how certain shows treat black characters, in addition to many other topics. The book opened my eyes to things I hadn't thought about as much as I should have, and our discussion did the same. I truly hope you enjoy our chat. Hello all, this is Mo. Ryan and I are creating a lot of Fall TV podcasts for you in the next couple of weeks. But now for something completely different.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum tweeted the theory that much of the most interesting drama of the last decade or so had been about middle-aged men and teen girls; many of the most interesting shows, she noted, had featured "two contrasting forms of adolescence." My instant reaction: Relevant to my interests. I invited Emily on the podcast to talk about that theory and much more.

On Twitter, we also got into a discussion with several other critics and Twitterers about shows like "Felicity" and the idea that calling a show "just a soap opera" is, for some people, a condescending insult. That drives me a little bit nuts because every scripted drama is full of contrivances and most engage in some kind of melodrama. In our podcast discussion, we talked about what kinds of contrivances and melodramatic moves are considered "good" or worthy, and what kind are considered "bad" or unimportant. We also talked about when the mixing genres and formulas starts to weird people out, and which shows get relegated to the margins while others get to be more central to the discussion of the Golden Age of Television.

Some of the shows that came up were "Buffy," "The Sopranos," "Boardwalk Empire," "Battlestar Galactica," "Gilmore Girls," "Breaking Bad," "Once and Again" and of course "Spartacus." But there were dozens that we mentioned in this free-ranging discussion of cultural hierarchies, criticism, characters' power struggles and why "Friday Night Lights" successfully crossed so many boundaries.

Oh, and we also talked about shows that make us cry and how much we think about whether to bring that up in reviews. Enjoy!

UPDATE: The podcast cuts off after I make a comment about my husband introducing me to "Buffy," around the 49-minute mark. I should have noted the somewhat abrupt ending in my introductory remarks -- I meant to do that but forgot. Sorry about that! In any event, at that point we ran out of time and had to end the podcast. A few of you have asked me if you missed anything after that point, but don't worry, you didn't. Again. sorry for the abrupt ending. I'm still working on my podcast production skills.

Be sure to subscribe to the new feed for the podcast here if you like to listen on iTunes. You'll see plenty of ways in each post to stream or download MP3s if you hate iTunes with the same passion that Mo and Emily hate unfair dismissals of shows that explore emotional intimacy.

It's a podcast frenzy! Mo Ryan and Ryan McGee have already done a "Doctor Who" Watching TV podcast and a TARDIS-"Breaking Bad" Talking TV podcast this week, but we've got one more recording for you.

On Sept. 1, Mo and Peter Sagal of NPR's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me" sat down with George R.R. Martin to discuss all things "Game of Thrones." Martin is the author of "A Song of Ice and Fire," the novel series on which the HBO drama is based, and the panel discussion took place at Chicon, the 70th World Science Fiction Convention. The trio talked about the TV show, the book series and took audience questions for about 70 minutes.
