Hi there, it's Mo here with a really special treat. In June, I moderated a panel on the HBO drama "The Leftovers" at the ATX Television Festival in Austin. It was a few days after the show's series finale aired, and on the panel were executive producer Damon Lindelof, executive producer (and author of the novel "The Leftovers") Tom Perrotta, and executive producer/director Mimi Leder. At the start of the conversation, I handed out tissues to all the panelists, because I was fairly sure most of us were going to cry at some point.

Many did, but before and after those moments, we talked about the show in depth, and it was life-affirming to hear these creative and thoughtful people talk about the themes of "The Leftovers" and the choices they made and why this amazing program ended the way it did. Near the end, Lindelof made me cry in a way I totally did not see coming (which seems like a very "Leftovers"-ian thing to do, and that moment also has to do with this essay). By the way, if you're a "Leftovers completist, don't miss this previous Talking TV podcast on the show

One other note: Jasmin Savoy-Brown, who played Evie Murphy, was in the audience, and that led to the above moment of mild hilarity (because everyone enjoys Guilty Remnant humor). In any event, I loved moderating this panel, the panelists were wise and funny and informative, the audience questions at the end were great, and lots of people got a little bit misty before it was all over. What more could we ask for?

It's Mo flying solo and talking to W. Kamau Bell, host of the fine CNN series "United Shades of America, which returns April 30. It's a show that manages to be funny, timely and well-researched, and Bell is one of the best conversationalists on TV right now. We talk about how his show changed its approach slightly in Season 2, and about where he and his producers went this year.

Hi, it's Mo here, and I've got Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan talking about their Amazon series 'Catastrophe.' It's great and you should watch it (and both seasons are on Amazon Prime in the United States). I didn't record an introduction to this podcasta because GarageBand decided to be difficult. Still, they're great, 'Catastrophe' is terrific, and ideally you will enjoy both. One note: Toward the end of the podcast, I mention a show called 'Divorce,' which is a TV series that Sharon is working on for another network (it's nothing to do with 'Catastrophe'). Hi there, it's Mo with a podcast all about the Netflix comedy "Master of None." I spoke to co-creator and executive producer Alan Yang and executive producer Mike Schur about the comedy and its origins and its point of view, and we also talked about the state of how TV deals with race, behind the scenes and on screen. These conversations were also part of a couple of big stories I'm dropping this week, on the ABC comedy "Black-ish" and on TV's new, more direct approach to matters of race. If you like this conversation with Schur, by the way, you may like a different conversation with him that we posted a few weeks ago.

Hi, it's Mo here with a conversation with Kenya Barris, the creator and showrunner of the ABC comedy "Black-ish." We talked about the Feb. 24 episode of the show, in which the Johnson family has a series of conversations about police brutality and how to discuss it with the younger Johnson kids. We also discussed the racial landscape of TV and what has and hasn't changed there, and we talked about "Black-ish" in general and what makes it such a strong and versatile addition to the television landscape. About halfway through, executive producer Jonathan Groff joined the conversation as well. If you like this podcast, please check out two others that drop this week -- one with interviews with the cast of "Black-ish," one containing conversations with Alan Yang and Mike Schur, executive producers of "Master of None." And please check out my stories on "Black-ish" and how TV talks about race on the Variety web site, if you care to.

It's Mo here, with a conversation with Mike Schur, executive producer of Parks and Recreation, Master of None, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the upcoming NBC comedy Good Thing. I spoke to Mike when I was in Los Angeles recently, and the shows and ideas we talked about in our wide-ranging discussion include (among other topics):

  • The Leftovers (we talk about certain elements within Season 2 but not after the 40-minute mark. Also, my Variety interview with Damon Lindelof, which we talk about a little, is here and the Andy Greenwald-Lindelof podcast we mention is here)
  • Master of None and writing TV in the streaming age, i.e., how creating a show that airs weekly isn't like creating a binge-able show, and why limitations on writing aren't bad things
  • What an episode of TV is, should be or can be in the age of streaming, and the difficulties of ending anything, especially a long-running TV show
  • In that context, we talked a little about the endings of Parks and Recreation, The Shield and The Sopranos (no Parks or Shield spoilers, but we do mention the Sopranos ending)
  • From minute 66 to the end, we talk about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We discuss what we liked about the movie, one or two things we question and what some of the responses to Rey say about popular culture.

A special edition of the Talking TV podcast with a special guest -- Hitfix critic Alan Sepinwall (feel free to think of the episode as a rare edition of the Firewall and Mo-Berg podcast). We talk about the new, revised edition of Alan's book, "The Revolution Was Televised," and discuss what we love, don't love and question about the current TV landscape. Talk of Alan's book and general questions about the state of TV are woven into conversations about some of the shows on the Top 10 rosters we submitted this year to Hitfix's annual critics poll.

Here are time codes for the discussions (and there is some overlap here and there, as well as a few mentions of other shows not listed here):

0 - 7:19 Introduction and book talk

7:20 - 12:59 Master of None

13:00 - 18:30 TV's worst trend

26:00 - 29:33 The Leftovers

29:34 - 37:29 The 100

37:30 - 41:49 The trouble with many broadcast network dramas

41:50 - 50:25 Fargo

50:26 - 58:21 You're the Worst

58:22 - 63:39 What's missing from TV

63:40 - end Mad Men

He talks about the show's mix of comedy and drama, working with Gina Rodriguez (Jane) and the rest of the cast, what's coming up for Rogelio, tweeting with his fictional alter ego and dubbing his own voice for "Jane the Virgin's" Hispanic markets, among many other topics. If you enjoy this chat, you may want to check out recent interviews with "Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez (story and podcast) and with "Jane the Virgin's" executive producer, Jennie Snyder Urman (story and podcast).

There aren't many plot specifics about individual episodes. Goffman and I do talk about the general philosophy behind Season 2, the new character played by Matt Hawley, what his arrival will mean for Ichabod and Abbie and the epic nature of the core duo's quest. It's Mo here, and in this podcast, I spend just under an hour talking to Jill Soloway, who created the "dark comedy" "Transparent." The half-hour pilot premiered on Amazon recently and it stars Jeffrey Tambor, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker and Gaby Hoffmann.

Soloway, who previously worked on shows like "Six Feet Under" and "United States of Tara," talked about what it was like making a TV show with the online company and how it was different and similar from making a pilot with a broadcast or cable network. We also talked about the inspiration for the project and the research she did on the characters, and of course there was a digression about "Girls."

Mo spoke with Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of Syfy's "Battlestar Galactica," on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the show's debut. We talked about the legacy of the show, the reaction to its finale, the difficulty of finales in general (he had some advice for Damon Lindelof of "Lost"), how the TV landscape is changing, what TV networks are still afraid of and what kinds of fare they're looking for, and the difficulty of telling TV stories with religious and political themes. We also discussed "Helix," a new Syfy thriller he's involved in, and his other new project, an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" for Starz.

Hope you enjoy this far-ranging discussion of the current state of TV and the impact "Battlestar Galactica" had on this galaxy (among others). By the way, if you're feeling nostalgic for all things Adama and Roslin, Mo covered "BSG" in depth while it was on the air. Hi, it's Mo here with a Thangsgiving special for you. Almost exactly 20 years ago, Nickelodeon debuted a show that has gone on to lodge itself deeply in the hearts and minds of its fans. "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" was the story of two brothers -- both sporting red hair, both named Pete Wrigley -- and their slightly odd but lovable collection of friends, enemies, parents, teachers and neighbors. Rounding out the cast was, of course, Artie, the Strongest Man in the World.

In this half-hour chat, creators Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi discuss the ideas behind the show, the reasons for the fervor of the fanbase and the reasons they've returned to Nickelodeon with a new(ish) project, "Sanjay and Craig." Enjoy, my little Vikings: I certainly had a wonderful time talking to these guys, and not just because they said I could play Female Older Pete if a movie spinoff ever got off the ground.

By the way, for proof that my love of "Pete & Pete" runs deep, check this out. It's a "Pete & Pete" interview I did with McRobb and Viscardi in the mid-'90s.

It's Mo here with a conversation with Michelle MacLaren, who directed the epic 13th episode of "Breaking Bad's" final season, "To'hajiilee." In the 27-minute podcast, Michelle discusssed the planning of the episode, shooting in the New Mexico desert where parts of the pilot were shot, working with the actors to get all those memorable reactions and emotional moments, and staging some of the most suspenseful TV sequences ever to air on TV.

We also talked a little bit at the end of the podcast about the similarities and differences between shooting "Breaking Bad" and "Game of Thrones." MacLaren, who directed the HBO show in its third season, has returned to Northern Ireland to shoot Episodes 4 and 5 of the fourth season of the drama.

Mo's here with television writer creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach ("Lost," "Boomtown," "Medium," "The Middleman"), and they talk about television's past, present and future for 102 minutes (108 would have been better, admittedly).

To see the post by Javier wrote that kicked off the whole discussion, go here. Shows mentioned in the wide-ranging discussion include "Louie," "Babylon 5," "The X-Files," "The Twilight Zone," "Game of Thrones," "The Middleman," "The Shield," "Friday Night Lights," "Battlestar Galactica," "The Guild," "Rectify," "Banshee," "The Walking Dead," "Roots," "Star Trek," "Spartacus" (of course) and "Law and Order." No spoilers. A few time codes/guideposts (all times are approximate):

44 - 48: An upcoming "Middleman" crowdfunding initiative (fans of comic books, the TV show and Amber Benson, don't miss this part).

49 - 67: Serialization, mythology, tone, viewpoint and theme and how they can unify a show.

68 - 83: Blockbuster television, the rise of genre television and television's return to event-based programming.

Comic-Con is here, so here's something a little different for you: An hourlong talk with the creative team behind Marvel's "Hawkeye" comic book.

In this podcast, writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja talk about the collaborative process behind one of the most acclaimed comics around, discuss what Clint Barton has been through and what's ahead for him and Kate, and talk about how the lack of expectations surrounding "Hawkeye" allowed them to take a lot of chances.

And of course we talk about Pizza Dog!

Even if you don't read comics much, this is one that I think you may enjoy. In the podcast, we don't get into specifics about plot points that have transpired in the comic until about the halfway point of the podcast, so if you just want to hear some general discussion, listen up to around minute 28. After that, we talk about what's next for Clint and Kate and the pooch, among other topics, and if you're a fan of "Hawkeye," you'll get some advance scoop on what's to come for the greatest sharpshooter known to man.

Give attention, "Spartacus" fans. We would break words with you. Find hand in possession of beverage, set mind to purpose and turn ears to epic finale podcast. Words will be spoken, hearts will be lifted, memories will be shared and such tributes will ensure that the Bringer of Rain, the Undefeated Gaul and all the gods of the arena shall not pass from memory.

All right, that's about as much "Spartacus"-speak as I can manage right now. But Ryan McGee and I are very excited to mark the series finale of Starz's "Spartacus" with an extensive interview with the show's creator. For more than an hour, executive producer Steven DeKnight talks about how he and the show's creative team approached the final installment of the epic drama, the challenges of wrapping up various' characters arcs, the underlying themes of the drama and many other details about what you saw in "Victory." We also review many high points and memorable moments from the show's history, and we discuss various elements of the fans response the show elicited over the past three years. If you've got questions about the last season or the finale, they're probably answered here, or in Ryan's interview with DeKnight over at the AV Club. [By the way, earlier in the season, I spoke to DeKnight, as well as cast members Todd Lasance (Caesar) and Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), and those interviews is here].

At the tail end of the DeKnight interview, he also discussed a show he is developing for Starz, the military sci-fi drama "Incursion." I am very excited about that project and DeKnight revealed some key information about it in that part of the interview.

For the final 20 minutes or so of the podcast, Ryan and I discussed our own reactions to the "Spartacus" finale, which I also wrote about at Huffington Post (that post also contains highlights of the DeKnight interview). Ryan's write up of "Victory" can be found here as well, and with that, we bid a fond farewell to "Spartacus," a badass, bloody, emotionally resonant show that accomplished a great deal in its short but eventful life. Gratitude!

Hello, it's  Mo here again, with a podcast featuring the men of Spartacus.

These interviews were recorded in late January, just before a Spartacus retrospective panel at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For the first half of the podcast, I spoke to Liam McIntyre and Todd Lasance, who play Spartacus and Julius Caesar in the new season. They discussed the men's motivations, their methods and why, for both characters, the battle between the slaves and the Romans is a fight to the death. We also discuss the fact that history is something of a spoiler in this regard, in that it's pretty clear that Caesar lived past this era in his life. But Lasance assures fans that Caesar will go through many "epic" and insane moments before the series comes to a close.

McIntyre also talks about Spartacus' mindset and priorities this season, and about the dark tone of the early episodes. There's also a brief discussion of the training regimes both men had to keep up in order to keep up the show's buff 'n' brawny image.

In the second half of the podcast, creator and executive producer Steven DeKnight talked about the things he tried to achieve with the Starz drama's final go-round. We didn't discuss upcoming plot points in detail, but we did talk things that have transpired in the first three episodes of "War of the Damned," including Naevia's shift in attitude, the arrival of the pirates, the difficult leadership challenges faced by Crassus, Caesar and Spartacus and other events that took place episodes that have already aired. We also discussed the issue of violence in popular culture and why some people find it difficult to see past the show's reputation for blood and breasts and to appreciate the challenging, subversive critique of power that lies at the heart of the drama.

Put ears to purpose and attend the words of these warriors! Be sure to subscribe to the new feed for the podcast here if you like to listen on iTunes. You'll see plenty of ways in each post to stream or download MP3s if you hate iTunes as much as Naevia hates showing mercy to Romans.

Max moderated a 90-minute discussion among the four of us, which took place in front of his class and which touched on the state of reality TV, trends in scripted TV, what defines a TV hit, how the financial models of the media industry are changing and what TV even is these days.

I enjoyed this discussion enormously; Myles, Erik and Max are very smart, funny and perceptive and I did my best to keep up with them. I am very grateful to Max for recording the discussion and allowing us to post it here for you (he also posted it on Soundcloud if you prefer that audio experience).

We didn't talk in depth about specific programs all that often in this chat, but if you enjoy chats about where TV creators and viewers have been and where they're going and why, I hope you find it interesting. Please forgive any quirks in the recording: Max's students were a very quiet, respectful (and smart) audience, but the audio quality reflects the fact that we were in a somewhat spacious classroom and there is going to be a bit of variability in volume and so forth. I think it sounds good, but it's not going to sound the same as a podcast recorded by two people speaking into microphones.

It's Mo here, with a chat with two members of the "Arrow" brain trust.

Fans of the CW show will want to check out this chat, which features "Arrow" executive producers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim talking about where Oliver Queen has been, where he's going and what friends and nemeses he'll encounter next.

Though there is a feature on the show on my Huffington Post page (and much of that feature is drawn from my chat with the show's producers), there are a lot of topics that didn't make it into the article. Is Oliver Queen a liberal superhero? Is he a Jack Bauer for the left? Is he a force for good in Starling City or a vigilante who's making up his morality as he's going along? What kind of relationship will he have with Laurel Lance going forward? What's next for his family and for his friend, Tommy Merlin? How does the show differ from the comic books and why?

All those questions are discussed, and we also chatted about upcoming guest stars James Callis, David Anders, Manu Bennett, the arrival of Roy Harper and the return of some key characters we met last fall.

Mo Ryan is here with an hour-plus discussion with TV and media critic Eric Deggans, who wrote the fascinating new book "Race Baiter."

Eric is the television and media critic for the Tampa Bay Times and also a contributor to NPR, and he's one of the most intelligent and most cogent critics I know. In his book, which I highly recommend, he has used his clear-sighted intelligence and his compassionate persistence to examine the way television does -- and does not -- deal with matters of race.

Why are there so few characters of color -- still -- on television? Why are leading characters so often white? Why do reality-show contestants so often conform to stereotypes about race, gender and class? Why does the news media persist in fanning the flames of conflict and discord rather than present opportunities for real discussions about important matters in this arena?

With solid reporting and clear-eyed analysis, Eric examines all these things and more in his book, and we discuss many of those topics in the podcast. We discuss how the book got that name, why the television industry is resistant real evolution in this area and how certain shows treat black characters, in addition to many other topics. The book opened my eyes to things I hadn't thought about as much as I should have, and our discussion did the same. I truly hope you enjoy our chat. I certainly did, because Eric is a smart and thoughtful critic and it is a pleasure to listen to and learn from him.

Hello all, this is Mo. Ryan and I are creating a lot of Fall TV podcasts for you in the next couple of weeks. But now for something completely different.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum tweeted the theory that much of the most interesting drama of the last decade or so had been about middle-aged men and teen girls; many of the most interesting shows, she noted, had featured "two contrasting forms of adolescence." My instant reaction: Relevant to my interests. I invited Emily on the podcast to talk about that theory and much more.

On Twitter, we also got into a discussion with several other critics and Twitterers about shows like "Felicity" and the idea that calling a show "just a soap opera" is, for some people, a condescending insult. That drives me a little bit nuts because every scripted drama is full of contrivances and most engage in some kind of melodrama. In our podcast discussion, we talked about what kinds of contrivances and melodramatic moves are considered "good" or worthy, and what kind are considered "bad" or unimportant. We also talked about when the mixing genres and formulas starts to weird people out, and which shows get relegated to the margins while others get to be more central to the discussion of the Golden Age of Television.

Some of the shows that came up were "Buffy," "The Sopranos," "Boardwalk Empire," "Battlestar Galactica," "Gilmore Girls," "Breaking Bad," "Once and Again" and of course "Spartacus." But there were dozens that we mentioned in this free-ranging discussion of cultural hierarchies, criticism, characters' power struggles and why "Friday Night Lights" successfully crossed so many boundaries.

Oh, and we also talked about shows that make us cry and how much we think about whether to bring that up in reviews. Enjoy!

UPDATE: The podcast cuts off after I make a comment about my husband introducing me to "Buffy," around the 49-minute mark. I should have noted the somewhat abrupt ending in my introductory remarks -- I meant to do that but forgot. Sorry about that! In any event, at that point we ran out of time and had to end the podcast. A few of you have asked me if you missed anything after that point, but don't worry, you didn't. Again. sorry for the abrupt ending. I'm still working on my podcast production skills.

Mo Ryan and Ryan McGee are looking for ways to add variety to this podcast feed, and are proud to introduce a new series that includes segments from past episode that are still relevant/amusing/enlightening today.

The move to the new hosting system has provided a lot of advantages, but unfortunately little access to the 2+ years of archives from the old feed. While those podcasts still exist, they are not readily accessible at the current time. They may well be available again for download in the future, but in the meantime, we hope this is an interim solution.

To kick off this series, we go back to September 2010, for the final twenty minutes of our podcast with Shawn Ryan ("The Shield," "Terriers", and the upcoming ABC drama "Last Resort".) This segment was actually his idea, as he wanted to use the opportunity of coming on the podcast to discuss some problems that showrunners have within this day and age of television production. It's a fantastic segment, and a highlight in the "Talking TV" history.

The first two installments of this series featured Mo and Ryan discussing episodes of television in sync with the action onscreen. For our third installment, we've done something we've wanted to do since the advent of the series: have people associated with these episodes come on and discuss their work with us. So we're proud to have "Battlestar Galactica" scribes David Weddle and Bradley Thompson on to discuss the fourth season episode "Someone To Watch Over Me".

Unfortunately, Ryan couldn't be in LA with Mo, David, and Bradley. Even more unfortunately, technology tried to ensure this podcast never got recorded on several occasions. What you have here is the complete discussion, but with post-production edits to make sure everything more or less lines up with the action onscreen. If you hear a brief pause in the dialogue, don't worry: we have a full discussion of the entire episode on tap this week.

What you have here is a masterclass about what it takes to make an episode of television. Weddle and Thompson have incredible insight, fantastic anecdotes, and a real passion for the material. This is actually the first time they have gone back to watch it since "Someone" originally aired, and you can hear them get more excited and energized as the episode goes on. Mo and Ryan hope this is the first of many such installments of "Watching TV With Ryan and Ryan," and they hope you enjoy this installment of the podcast.

Two program notes: 1) the episode discussion starts around 18:00 into the podcast, and we count you in so you know where to start, and 2) there's some adult language near the end, so be aware of that.

Mo Ryan is out in L.A., working hard to bring you the latest and greatest from the Television Critics Association summer press tour. With Mo otherwise occupied, Ryan McGee brought in some heavy hitters. Myles McNutt stops by to talk about why "hatewatching" is a concept that might have gone too far in our general discourse, and then Donna Bowman and Noel Murray stop by to talk about the pros and cons of collaborative criticism. (You can find a good example of such criticism in the Summer Roundtable in which the three of us have participated this summer.)

Today's breakdown:

Myles: 0:00 - 23:49

Donna and Noel: 23:49 - End

Mo and Ryan are back with their second installment in this ongoing series. In each episode, they offer up a "DVD commentary" for a classic episodes of television. The first installment looked at the classic "The X-Files" episode "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'". This time, they look at a seminal installment of Joss Whedon's sometimes-ignored classic series "Angel." With all the talk about "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly", this show often gets lost in the mix. The two Ryans hope to rectify that slightly in this week's podcast.

The episode is available on many streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon. But you don't have to have the episode in front of you to enjoy this discussion of the show. While we occasionally talk about things onscreen, we largely talk big picture, both about "Angel" but also the themes that "Waiting" itself raises. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did recording.

If you want to read the article Mo references in the podcast about Cordelia Chase, go here.

If you want to see the deleted scene Ryan mentions, you can see it here.

Enjoy!

Here's a feature that Mo and Ryan have wanted to revisit for a while. After all, they got started as a podcasting duo by recording commentary tracks for each episode of the final season of "Lost." Now, they are expanding their horizons and looking at television as a whole for episodes that inspire them enough to devote an entire podcast to discussing its merits.

This isn't a "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" takedown. While the tone is lighthearted, we strive to analyze why the episode works, place it in broader context, and discuss why it's worthy of discussion. This week's inaugural installment looks at one of the seminal episodes of one of the seminal series of the 1990's: "The X-Files"' mind-bendy masterpiece "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'"

The episode is available on many streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon. But you don't have to have the episode in front of you to enjoy this discussion of the show. While we occasionally talk about things onscreen, we largely talk big picture, both about "The X Files" but also the themes that "Jose" itself raises. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did recording.

Mo Ryan and Ryan McGee are back, this time with "Cougar Town" co-creator Kevin Biegel. He stops by the podcast for nearly an hour with in-depth discussion surrounding the recent changes behind the scenes, what that means for the show going future, and why fans shouldn't worry about the cul-de-sac crew's time on TBS. While you may have heard some rumblings about recent events, you definitely haven't heard them in as you will in this lengthy, candid conversation.
